Uses of modals



Must


Must is used :

  • To express necessity; as,

    1. They must leave immediately.
    2. You must work hard to get good marks.
  • To express obligation; as,

    1. You must obey your elders.
    2. Parents must look after their children.
  • Must not is used to express prohibition; as,

    1. You must not misuse money.
    2. You must not watch so much television.

Dare

It is generally used in negative and interrogative sentence; as,

  1. You dare not take such a step.
  2. How dare you speak against me?

Need

It is often used in questions; as,

  1. Need I come again?.
  2. Need I wear a tie?

Ought to

It is used to express moral obligation; as,

  1. We ought to love our country.
  2. We ought to help our friends.

Used to

To express a discontinued habit; as,

  1. She used to drink daily.
  2. We used to play chess every evening.
  3. He used to go for a walk.
