Past Tense


The past tense indicates that the action was done at the past time.


Look at the following examples:

  1. She wrote a letter.
  2. I went to school.
  3. She was writing a letter.





Kinds of past tense



There are four kinds of past tense.

  1. Past simple tense or Past Indefinite.
  2. Past continuous tense or Past progressive.
  3. Past perfect tense
  4. Past Perfect continuous tense



Past simple tense

The simple past tense is used to express an action that took place in the past.


Past continuous tense

The past continuous is used to express a continued or ongoing action in past.


Past perfect tense

Past perfect tense is used to express an action completed in the past before another action took place.


Past perfect continuous tense

Past perfect continuous tense expresses an action that had been going on for sometime in the past.
