Past simple tense




The simple past tense is used:

  • To express an action that took place in the past; as,

    1. I wrote a letter to John.
    2. I met him yesterday.
  • To express habitual action in the past; as,

    1. She took a morning walk daily.
    2. He learnt his lesson everyday.


The past simple tense is one of four Past tenses. They are Past simple tense, Past continuous tense, Past perfect tense and Past Perfect continuous tense.







How to make the past simple




Positive (Past simple)

Past simple sentences, have the following structure:

  • Subject + main verb + Object.
  • Subject + 2nd form of verb + Object.

For examples:


Subject

I

He

You

2nd form of verb

ate

played

played

Object

an apple.

cricket.

cricket.


REMEMBER

Rules:  For past simple positive sentences:

  • In positive sentences, 2nd form of verb is used as main verb.




Negative (Past Simple)

Past simple negative sentences, have the following structure :

  • Subject + auxiliary verb+ not + main verb + Object.
  • Subject + did + not + Ist form of verb + Object.

For examples:

  1. John did not go to school.
  2. He did not play cricket.
  3. I did not eat an apple.

REMEMBER

Rules:  For past simple negative sentences:

  • Auxiliary verbdid” along with “not” is used.
  • In negative sentences, Ist form of verb is used instead of using 2nd form of verb.


Interrogative (Past Simple)

Past simple interrogative sentences, have the following structure :

  • auxiliary verb + Subject + main verb + Object?
  • Did + Subject + Ist form of verb + Object?

For examples:

  1. Did John go to school?
  2. Did he play cricket?
  3. Did you eat an apple?

REMEMBER

Rules:  For past simple interrogative sentences:

  • In interrogative sentences, Ist form of verb is used instead of using 2nd form of verb.


Interrogative negative (Past Simple)

Past simple interrogative negative sentences, have the following structure :

  • auxiliary verb + Subject + not + main verb + Object.
  • Did + Subject + not + Ist form of verb + Object.

For examples:

  1. Did John not go to school?
  2. Did he not play cricket?
  3. Did you not eat an apple?
