what is an adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun.

For examples :

  1. He is  intelligent.
    The word itelligent is an adjective. It is describing the pronoun, he.
  2. John is beautiful.
    The word beautiful is an adjective. It is describing the noun, John.
  3. That food was good.
    The word good is an adjective. It is describing the noun, food.


KINDS OF ADJECTIVE



  1. Proper Adjective.
  2. Adjective of Quality.
  3. Adjective of Quantity.
  4. Adjective of Number.
  5. Demonstrative Adjective.
  6. Interrogative Adjective.
  7. Possessive Adjective.



Proper Adjective

Adjectives that are derived from proper nouns are called proper adjectives. Proper adjectives begin with a capital letter in English; American, African, etc.

For examples :

  1. He is an American.
     American is derived from the proper noun America.
  2. I have many African friends.
     African is derived from the proper noun Africa.


Adjective of Quality

Adjectives of quality show the kind or quality of a person or a thing.

For examples :

  1. He is an honest boy.
  2. It is a heavy box.


Adjective of Quantity

Adjective of quantity answer the question, 'how much'?

For examples :

  1. She has little knowledge.
  2. He lost all his wealth.


Adjective of Number

Adjective of number answer the question, 'how many' ? or 'in what order' ?

For examples:

  1. Five apples are rotten.
  2. We have six cars.


Demonstrative Adjective

Demonstrative adjectives point out which person or thing is meant. They are this, these, those, that etc.

For examples:

  1. That teacher is very honest.
  2. Those plums are juicy.


Interrogative Adjective

Interrogative Adjective is the adjective that is used to ask the question. They are where, what, which, etc.

For examples:

  1. Whose book is this?
  2. What book are you reading?


Possessive Adjective

Possessive Adjectives are used to show possession or ownership of something. They are my, your, his, our, etc.

For examples:

  1. This is my car.
  2. That is your book.
